Facts & Fiction - Concepts
The production of high quality silage relies on many factors. The basis though is to start
with as high of a quality feedstuff as possible and then preserve as much of both the quality
and quantity as possible. The value of this is great enough and the difficulty noteworthy
enough that ancient cultures attributed the remarkable power of fermentation worthy
of gods and worshipped gods. The Egyptians praised Osiris for the brewing of beer and
the Greeks established Bacchus as the god of wine. |
Now, we look at the science of fermentation much more critically and scientifically in order obtain the maximum benefits from controlling it in the production of silages for feeding dairy cattle. Producers now look to recognized experts such as Dr. Limin Kung for assistance in improving fermentation of silages. There are many possible sources of losses of both quality and quantity of silage as seen in the illustration below. It is the goal of experts such as these and The Silage Guys to help producers identify the potential problems and eliminate or reduce them to the best of our abilities. |

Experts such as Dr Kung, Dr. Muck, Dr. Holmes, Dr. Hutjens, Dr. Harrison, Dr. Chase,
Dr. Heinrichs, and others would all agree on the most important basic guidelines for producing,
storing and feeding high quality silages.
1. The Quality Of The Fresh Feed Largely Determines The Quality Of The Silage
2. Proper Chopping And Processing Helps Insure Optimum Fermentation
3. Fast Filling To Prevent Prolonged Exposure Of fresh Feed To Air Is Important
4. Adequate Packing Is Necessary Both To Insure A Fast Fermentation And Prevent Exposure To Air During Storage
And Feedout
5. Covering And Sealing The Silage As Soon As Possible After Ensiling Is CriticalGood Face Management And Proper Feedout Is Critical |
